National Dance Museum

As part of art and aesthetic, we visited Kerala Natanagramam on 25th February 2022. We MTTC student teachers were guided by our teachers Maya ma'am, Ancy ma'am and Joju sir. The transportation facilities were provide by MTTC via buses. I had no idea about the place I'm going to visit. Somewhere I had heard the name Guru Gopinath. But the significance of this name was understood when I visited there. The importance of art and culture  and the people who was behind this art forms , different mudras, different dance forms all over India and all over the world and Guru Gopinath and his achievements were portrayed well. Also there was a documentary show based on theyyam. Finally we had a lecture session on  Kerala natanam by  Dr. Sajeev Nair who was working as the senior vice manager in reliance industries. He gave an awareness on kerala natanam. Kerala natana gramam is a national dance museum which covers 2 acres of land. Kerala natanam actually originated from Kathakali. Kerala natanam means story play and  is a classical dance-drama. Abhinaya means to educate or lead the way towards the audience. The Sanskrit term 'Abhi' means towards and 'nii' means leading/guide. Hence abhinaya is "Leading an audience towards" the experience (bhava) of a sentiments. 
Abhinaya and it's 4 types are angika abhinaya, vachika abhinaya, acharya abhinaya  and satvika abhinaya. 
 The hand gestures used in Kerala natanam are mudras. There are 24 mudras.Mudras are taken from hasthalakshana. The mudras are:

The session concluded by saying that non verbal communication is effective than verbal communication in teaching. 



The Guru Gopinath Natanagramam is a cultural institution functioning under the Department of Culture, Government of Kerala. It was started in 1994 under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act of 1955 as per the directions in Government Order (GO) M.S. No. 38/94/CAD Dated 26.11.1994. The center, named after the late Dr. Guru Gopinath, a pioneer reformer of Kathakali dance, was established in Vattiyoorkavu, a suburb of capital city Thiruvananthapuram.
The Guru Gopinath Natanagramam has been established as a centre for learning, training and research in various Indian Dance forms, particularly Kerala Natanam, the dance form composed by the maestro Guru Gopinath. The institution carries on the attempts initiated by the Guru to popularise the dance forms of Kerala and to find fresh talents.
Pioneering the training and development of the Kerala Natanam style of dancing, promotion of all Indian classical and folk dance forms and setting up of audio visual library and research centre, organising dance festivals are the other aims of the society. It conducts free training programme for the needy and talent students from the Government Schools in Trivandrum.

Aims & Objectives

To promote other Indian Classical dances.

To provide training for boys and girls in the art of dance.

To co-operative with the Central academies, Universities, State Academies and other institutions and association for the furtherance of the development and enrichment of India Culture as a whole especially in the field of Indian dances.

To co-operative, as far as possible, and to the extent necessary, the activities in the field of dance and for their scientific development and enrichment.

To promote research in the field of dance and to establish a library and a museum for the purpose.

To sponsor festivals in the field of the above mentioned art.

To arrange performance by eminent dancers, promote inter-state cultural exchange and thereby contribute to the National integration of India.
